That's right. Our first tiny glimpse of Unreal Engine 6 has arrived — on a Sunday — in the form of a short trailer teasing the future of Rocket League. The teaser was revealed at the Rocket League Paris Major. I don't play Rocket League so I couldn't tell you how profound this "new era" looks, but I did notice something curious:

This frame appeared to show a sort of selection screen with Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite, Rocket League, and a Disney-esque scene. In the top left corner, there is a conspicuous address bar. It's unclear if this is just for marketing purposes or if Epic is genuinely working on a Verse protocol of sorts. Time will tell.

The preview build is available to download from the Epic Games launcher and GitHub. You may have to update or restart the launcher for the new build to appear.
Epic says version 5.8 prioritizes performance and stability, although it still ships with several new features — most notably an experimental mesh-based terrain editor. Additionally, MegaLights and Audio Insights have moved to Production Ready status.
⚠️ Preview builds are still under heavy and active development, and are therefore considered unstable. If you want to test an existing project, we highly recommend making a copy first.
The app allows you to test your Unreal Engine project on a mobile device by streaming directly from your PC over a local network. This new version works with both Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN, and uses Pixel Streaming 2 to achieve higher quality and lower latency.
It's available on iOS today, with Android coming very soon (it's apparently waiting in the review queue).

This year's event will include a first look at what's new in Unreal Engine 5.8, a look at the new Procedural Vegetation Editor, and even a new talk from our friend Ari Arnbjörnsson that goes deep on how frames are rendered in Unreal Engine. I wonder what surprises he has in store for us this time.
You can still get tickets for $649 until April 30. After that, the price will increase to $749. Epic is also offering $499 student tickets for those with .edu email addresses. More information is available on the official website.

In September 2023, Epic Games laid off at least 830 employees – about 16% of their staff – in order to recover from an extended period of spending way more money than they earned. Well, here we are again. This time, Tim attributes the overspending to industry-wide economic challenges and a "downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025".
Tim Sweeney:
Today we’re laying off over 1000 Epic employees. I'm sorry we're here again. The downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025 means we're spending significantly more than we're making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded. This layoff, together with over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles puts us in a more stable place.

Access to the service will end on November 5, 2026. After that, you will be directed to instead use the MetaHuman Creator that is integrated directly with Unreal Engine 5.6 and up.
The web app will be discontinued in phases, giving you plenty of time to export your MetaHumans.
If you want to retrieve your existing MetaHumans, you need only export them for the appropriate version of Unreal Engine using Bridge. If you want to continue authoring MetaHumans, you'll need to upgrade them to Unreal Engine 5.5 and then migrate them using this guide.

Yes, you read that right. Epic Games and Unity are working together, and the partnership will bear its first fruit in early 2026.
First: Unity's new cross-platform in-app purchase SDK will add support for Unreal Engine. This means Unreal developers will have the option to use Unity's new SDK to manage IAPs across all platforms.
Second, and perhaps more importantly: Unity developers will soon have the ability to publish their games in Fortnite. This immediately raises a lot of questions, and details are scarce right now, but Tim Sweeney had this to say when he made a surprise appearance at the Unite 2025 conference in Barcelona:
Now [Fortnite is] going to open up to all Unity games, thanks to some really amazing network technology Unity built that connects other engines into Unity through a networking protocol... Starting next year, Unity developers will be able to publish directly into Fortnite, to appear in Fortnite's discovery system alongside games built with Unreal Engine, and to participate in the Fortnite economy as it evolves towards an open metaverse economy connecting all users and all engines.
More details will be shared next year.

You can download it on the Epic Games Launcher and GitHub. In this release, PCG, Motion Design, Substrate materials, and first-person rendering are all moving to Production Ready status. MegaLights is moving up to Beta status and gaining support for directional lights, niagara particle lights, translucency, and hair strands. Additionally, this release introduces a new in-editor AI assistant. Apparently it is trained on the Unreal Engine documentation and source code. Time will tell how reliable it is.

The new submission deadline is now October 24 at 11:59 PM ET. The extension was prompted by a major outage at Amazon Web Services that affected Epic Games, blocking progress for MegaJam participants using UEFN/Fortnite. This comes only a few days after itch.io was hit by a DDoS attack right as the MegaJam was getting started. Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here.

The theme will be revealed when the jam begins October 16 at 12:00 PM PT as the Inside Unreal live stream concludes.
I also recommend reading and sharing our guide, 8 tips for surviving the Epic MegaJam — especially if this will be your first time competing. It was written for the 2023 MegaJam, but all of the advice still applies.
As per usual, there will be a dedicated place on our Discord server to discuss the event, ask questions, formulate ideas, and find teammates. Please consider joining us if you are participating. It's always a good time.

The preview build is available to download from the Epic Games launcher and GitHub. You may have to update or restart the launcher for the new build to appear.
Please note that the recently announced addition of Epic Developer Assistant is not included in the preview. It will be ship with the full release of version 5.7.0.
⚠️ Preview builds are still under heavy and active development, and are therefore considered unstable. If you want to test an existing project, I highly recommend making a copy first.
It has a dedicated tab just under Unreal Engine in the sidebar. From here, you can access the entire Fab marketplace, browse your library, and make new purchases without leaving the launcher. You can also batch download and export assets in a variety of formats to Unreal, Unity, Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, and Cinema 4D. Houdini and Marmoset Toolbag are not yet supported.
This is apparently the first step toward Fab replacing Quixel Bridge — which will happen eventually — but for now, you can continue using Bridge as you were. Nothing there is changing today. If you're a Bridge user, it's worth reading Quixel's blog post to learn more about the differences between Bridge and Fab, and what their plans are for the eventual transition.
You can also find a list of known issues on the official forum. Look for the Fab in Launcher section under the New and Ongoing Issues heading.
Oh, and in case you were wondering: yes, this means there is another new tab in the launcher that loads another whole separate application with slightly different layout, typography, and UI conventions. C'est la vie.
Looking at the roadmap, this appears to be a very significant release. PCG, Motion Design, Substrate materials, and first-person rendering are all moving to Production Ready status. MegaLights is moving up to Beta status and gaining support for directional lights, niagara particle lights, translucency, and hair strands. There's a lot here — but I want to call your attention to one major addition you might miss.
Unreal Engine 5.7 will introduce a new, experimental AI assistant. In Epic's words:
The AI Assistant gives you a faster way to get answers without leaving Unreal Engine. By sliding out a dedicated panel in the Editor, you can ask questions, generate code, or follow step-by-step guidance—all without switching to a browser.
You save time and stay in flow. Instead of breaking concentration to search online, you can get instant help, examples, and troubleshooting tips right inside the Editor.
I am very interested to see how this affects our Discord community, as well as other online communities where Unreal developers currently get this kind of support from fellow humans. Time will tell.

Yes, it is a seven-day game jam with "Mega" in the title, but no – this is not the Epic MegaJam. Apparently, that is still to come.
The Mega Stack-O-Jam is a new game jam that forgoes the usual theme and instead asks you to build something original using the recently-updated Stack-O-Bot sample game project. The jam will kick off during tomorrow's Inside Unreal live stream, and will conclude on August 21, 2025 at 11:59 PM ET.
Find your way to the jam's official itch.io page to register your participation and read all the details, including rules, prizes, and resources.
Looking for tips on how to survive the game jam? We published a guide for the 2023 Epic MegaJam, and many of the tips still apply today.
The Stack-O-Bot sample game project from Epic Games has been rebuilt from the ground up for Unreal Engine 5.6. The update leverages many new and advanced features, including dynamic cameras and NPCs driven by StateTree, Chaos Physics and Destruction, PCG, Level Instances, and more.

The change will come in June 2025 and will apply to any payments processed on Epic Games Store. Revenue beyond the first $1M will be subject to the standard 88%/12% revenue split.
Additionally, Epic will introduce web shops hosted by the Epic Games Store, allowing developers to offer players an alternative path for making in-app purchases. Purchases made in these web shops will also accrue 5% Epic Rewards. More details to come in the future.

That's right. Following Fab's dubious debut, our feedback has been heard! Starting today, if you have an Unreal Engine or Indie Quixel plan, you can resume downloading Megascans via the Bridge plugin or Quixel.com until December 31, 2024. After that, you will retain access to assets you already acquired, but the legacy Megascans library will become read-only as originally planned.
Quixel will also be offering a one-click "claim all" function, similar to the one found on Fab, sometime next week.

Also announced: For the first time, next year's State of Unreal keynote will be hosted at Unreal Fest instead of GDC.
The free asset drops everyone remembers from the Unreal Engine Marketplace are back. As we reported previously, a new batch will now release every two weeks – twice as frequently as previous drops. The assets below are free on Fab until December 3 at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Claim them now, even if you don't plan on using them; you might need them someday.
You can download it on the Epic Games Launcher and GitHub. This version is pretty packed with features, including a revamped Sequencer interface with better filtering and non-destructive animation layers, Control Rig deformers, the new experimental MegaLights, and much more. This release also sees a number of tools reaching Beta (Modular Control Rig, Substrate, Movie Render Graph) and Production Ready (Skeletal Editor, Choosers, Path Tracer, DMX) status.
If you are upgrading, brew a cup of coffee or tea and check out these resources while you wait:
The free asset drops everyone remembers from the Unreal Engine Marketplace are back. As we reported previously, a new batch will now release every two weeks – twice as frequently as previous drops. The assets below are free on Fab until November 19 at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Claim them now, even if you don't plan on using them; you might need them someday.
New batches of free assets will be released every two weeks instead of every month. That also means each batch will only be available for two weeks, so don't forget to claim them. Additionally, each batch will contain assets in multiple formats, not just Unreal Engine. Unless they increase the number of free assets per batch, this could mean a significant reduction in Unreal-specific assets.
Epic has also announced that they will pay out up to $5,000 USD for participating assets, depending on the product’s complexity, level of detail, quantity of file formats on offer, and product category.
Interested sellers can submit a listing here for consideration.
You can visit the website right now and buy assets for Unity, Unreal Engine, UEFN, and several DCC tools. The website looks pretty good, with better search, new licensing options, and the ability to hide products created with AI. However, there are several issues and missing features.
The UEFN integration is down for maintenance and the UE5 integration is "coming soon". Wishlists are nowhere to be found. New seller applications are delayed, as well. And yes – those of us who use the launcher are still stuck with the same old vault that requires us to go on a treasure hunt when assets are updated.
Epic has created a thread on the official forums to track all the launch issues. If you're having an issue that isn't listed, let them know.
The preview build is available to download from the Epic Games launcher and GitHub. You may have to update or restart the launcher for the new build to appear.
⚠️ Preview builds are still under heavy and active development, and are therefore considered unstable. If you want to test an existing project, I highly recommend making a copy first.
Another month, another batch of free assets on the Unreal Marketplace. Everything linked below is free to download until November 5, 2024. I recommend claiming all of them, even if you do not need it right now — you might someday.
This transition will come with many changes, so I recommend reading the full announcement from Epic. For those short on time, here are the highlights:
It's called the Epic Games Game Design Professional Certificate, and it's designed for beginners who want to learn the skills necessary to become a game developer. With 90+ hours of content and 10+ hours of hands-on learning, the course covers a wide array of topics from game design, level , and Blueprint scripting, to visual development, audio design, and UI.
You can evaluate the course with a 7-day free trial, but completing it and earning the certification requires a Coursera Plus subscription.

The update is available now on the Epic Games launcher and GitHub. Check out the official forum thread for more details about the fixes included.
